Tips on making stronger solder joints?

I need some feedback here. Recently I made a really big 2-player stick using pad hacks. Basically the wires were just stuck to the copper connections with a glob of solder. Well I ended up having to ship it, and a couple of the solder joints broke. Is there something that I could spray on my controllers to hold those joints in place that wouldn't mess with the circuitry?
