SoundCard Problem ! Can anyone Help ?

I have a TOSHIBA Satellite 2655XDVD Laptop
Which has a ESS ES1978 Soundcard. My problem is that I can only get sound in Windows and not in a DOS Window, can anyone help me as I prefer MAME for DOS.
