Why does donkey kong (among others) show up as using an 8-way joystick in mame?

I designed an IC solution for my 4-way versus 8-way problems about 6 months ago. I have been putting off making modifications to MAME to automatically assert a pin to my IC to do the correct mode automatically.

I finally started to do this last week, but I've run into a snag. Certain games, like Donkey Kong, are listed as 8-way. By that, I mean I use ArcadeOS to show the information for a particular game and it says 8-way for DK.

Anyway, I'm wondering why. Doesn't that game use a 4-way joystick. This will complicate the implementation I was going to do. It also avoids the software-based 4-way sticky behavior built into MAME now as that only kicks in if the game is tagged as 4-way.

Any insight would be appreciated...
