Well -- I replaced the power supply, but still get the breaker trip (argh!)
The machine is a Compaq Deskpro. I wonder if there is a MB switch that might be causing a voltage problem (is there such a thing?) I flipped one MB switch so that the machine would boot up on powerup (could this be the problem)
BTW -- thanks to Fireman Bill for the house fire prediction -- I'll keep it unplugged while it's unattended....
: Make sure other devices on the same house circuit are not overloading it. For example, many many lights, a fan motor, an appliance or other stuff can overload it.
: Also, it could be a bad power supply that is shorting out somehow.

: : I took my old PC out of the case and attached the MB, power supply and HD/CD to a board in the cabinet. Now, every so often, when I flip the power to the surge protector it is attached to, it trips the house breaker for that circuit (out go the lights!)
: : I have tried connecting wire with electrical tape between the various components to ground them together (kludgey) -- to no avail.
: : Could it be a bad powersupply?
: : Any advice?
