This was just a brainstorm that I had. I didn't draw up a schematic. What I'm really saying is that the common of the left switch shouldn't be wired to ground, but to the NC contact of up (the common contact of up would be wired to ground). So if you press left, you will still get a ground at the common contact of the left switch (through the NC contact of up) and the left switch will work normally. If you press upper-left, the NC switch will open on the up switch and prevent you from getting a ground on the left switch.

There still may be some issues, I've only done a pc gamepad hack and I think that this would work in that case.
