Here is the tip straight from his email:
Ace hardware stores carry them in shiny, but you can poke them thru a piece of styrofoam leaving only the heads visible & using a can of black spray paint dust them several times over an hour or so. The paint dries quickly, so you only need a mist & not a heavy concentration all at once. Allow them to dry overnight before using them.
