In Reply to: If anything, this mod could charitably be referred to as a 4-way stick EMULATOR, but calling it a "conversion" seems to be a bit of a misrepresentation since it DOES NOT convert an 8-way stick to a 4-way stick, even by your own odd definition of what a 4-way stick is. **nt** posted by The Maverick on 20, 2001 at 11:55 AM:

Seeing how some people seem to have a hard-on about the word convertor, I will from now on call it an emulator.

And to add more grease to this ongoing fire...
Restriction of the joystick movement may technical make a true 4-way joystick. But the restriction will wear as shown by many sloppy sticks found in arcades. Even so-called true, new arcade 4-ways are not pefect. The restriction has to be accurate per my joystick primer. A better 4-way would be the perfect 4 way joystick in my primer (which does not exist as far as I know) with some restriction to help you glide to the 4 main directions. The perfect 90 degree zones would solve the problem of sloppy sticks as they wear. And putting my IC in a sloppy old 4-way stick would help it to SEEM functional again. Ooooh, scary, but true.

I personally think this on-going debate is helping people to understand the functioning and limitations of joysticks. But I do not understand the constant need of CAPTIALS to disclaim my posts. Especially when this post was about an ATMEL programmer.

And thanx for CHARITABLY allowing me to call it an emulator. I take it you are too afraid to actually try it to see how it works.

From now on I personally beleive All restricted joysticks, blow. Mine is the only way. Long live software hacks. No need for anyone to post about restriction in any message because I do not beleive in it any more, so no-one should discuss it. I have SPOKEN... :-)

Sarcasm, in case you thought I was serious.

Derrick

: : Due to requests for this IC, I built a 5 peice programmer used to program the Atmel IC for my joystick mod.
