I've never tried running a PC without a case like you are doing, but I have a lot of experience troubleshooting electrical problems. Please be careful working with electricity while you are troubleshooting this problem.

If you suspect the power supply, try disconnecting the power supply from all of your PC components (motherboard, drives, etc...). If the breaker still trips, then you probably have a bad power supply.

I'm confused by your comment about gounding the components together. Everything connected to the power supply is likely to already have a ground wire in the power supply connector (most power supplies that I have seen have a diagram on them).

You may want to look for components that look or smell burned.
