If you are only wanting to do verticals then why put controls for asteroids, missile comand, track and field, and the other's that you mention? Sounds like the Pac Man series, donkey kong and dk jr, centipede, tempest, tac-scan, Quantum, dig dug, and arkanoid are the ones you want.
