Mame CFG file editor?

Any utilities to edit the .cfg files in the cfg directory? I know mame.cfg is a standard text file, but these are in some binary format. I also know I can tweak the settings via the in-game TAB menu, but would be great to be able to edit these offline (copy control config from one game to another, for instance).
