Or you could try to mount four switches at the diagonal positions of a 4-way joystick (so long as you could convince the software to give them priority over the forward, back, left, right switches.)
A toggle switch could then be used to make or break the ground for the 8-way switches (or, if you break the ground for the "regular" switches, you would have a Q-Bert stick.)
