If you're gonna have the diamond 'mask' (what's it really called, restrictor?) removeable, also make a second position for it which is rotated 45 degrees for Q-Bert. You'd have to program the controls in MAME for this setup of course.
: The diamond shape sounds more reasonable as this would allow you to do go directly to the 'up' from 'right' without going back to the centre.
