Randy Fromm's technical pages (posted in an earlier message) talked about solid color screens with vertical retrace lines. He mentioned fixing it by using the rubber handle of a screwdriver and tapping on the neck of the CRT. That actually made me a little nervous, so I tried just tilting the monitor forward and then I noticed that when I tapped on the front of the screen, it would flash momentarily to the right color. This made me 100% sure I had the heater-cathode short I had read about at Randy Fromm's site. I persisted with the gentle but firm tapping and immediately after one of the more firm taps, the screen went to a normal picture and never returned. I am not hardware oriented at all so I would have never figured this out without all the info I've found here and elsewhere. You gotta love the universe of information that is the Internet.
