Hey fellow UK comrade!!
I only use DOS mame myself, well basically quicker and the Arcade Monitor mode.
Information gathered by me, thus far...
HAPPS Optical Joysticks (No problems, just plug and play).
Optical 360 Wheel (not sure on the make, had to modify the wires slightly).
But I am 95% sure that any optical equipment from HAPPS will work with the Trackball Interface, I believe it is a standard AMOA interface.
As for using a gutted mouse I wouldn't know, I prefer the bought dedicated solution!
