This is something I have been thinking about for a while, in MAME the general way of emulating a rotary stick is to have one key for "turn left" and one for "turn right". If you had a 12 position rotary stick (commando ect) it might pe possible to wire the rotary poles to these the correct key and get ptoper rotation.

Problem: the correct direction to rotate depends on which way you are facing.
eg facing staight ahead you want to wire the position one to the left to "turn left" and the position one to the right as "turn right"
so ew turn left and are now facing at one oclock. the pole position one to the left of here should be turn left and the pole position should be turn right. We turn left to the two oclock position the pole to the left should be trun left BUT the pole to the right WHICH WAS TURN LEFT A MINUITE AGO NOW NEEDS TO BE TURN RIGHT.
So in essesce the switches need to swap around depending on your current position.

Perhaps if mame had provision for 12 keys, one for each position, this would be easier.

Not much help realy, just a collection of my musings on the subject.
