Okay, I've used Adv. Mame myself and its a great program if you get it configured correctly. Adv. Mame SHOULD only add to whatever modes you already have... not take any available ones away. Whether this happens or not can only be determined if you are testing it yourself but IMO you should definitely give it a try and see what happens. I would think that using Adv Mame would only help... not hurt. Additionally, you may want to look into AdvanceMenu and see if you can run multiple versions of Mame through it. That way, if you lose the modes you like by running Advance Mame you can run regular Mame as well for those games that need those modes.

As far as the "rolling" or "squishing" that you are getting on your monitor, you can probably fix all of these problems by installing a cap kit. This does involve discharging and messing a little with the electronics but I've heard its very straightforward and simple. I think the link on how to do it is in the Tech and Tips page.

Hope that helps!

: Hi all, ..

: I am a fair bit of a 'lurker' here, not posting too often :) .. but I do read through the important info and appreciate all your contributions to our cause ..

: I have recently got my second Mame cabinet going, which is (like the first) a converted mortal kombat cabinet, with a north-south rotated monitor. This second cabinet has a lot more 'tweaking' knobs at the rear compared to the standard horizontal cabinet that I got first ..

: ok here are the qns :

: 1 : I currently use ArcadeOS and vanilla DOS mame, .. but have been increasingly wanting to migrate to AdvanceMame and AdvanceMenu so as to get more control over the video modes, and to be able to use the SNES LPT1 controller that I have built already :) (AOS only recognises PSX LPT1 for my needs) ..

: One of the major reasons that I have stuck with AOS is the fact that I have an ATI mach64 card for each of the cabinets (brought specifically for them) so as to take advantage of the 640x480 mode .. espesh with vector games (which look great btw) ..

: what I want to know is, will I be sacrificing this 640x480 mode (which I have heard is exclusive to the m64 cards) by moving to AdvanceMame ?

: I wouldnt want to sacrifice the great looking NeoGeo games in this mode too :P

:
: 2 : Upon firing up the vertical cabinet, I found a common link between the monitors / resolutions on both cabinets. On the top and bottom of the vertical monitor (and on the sides of the horizontal monitor) the resolution 'squishes' in some games, most noticable in Capcom games (Varth) and even galaga.

: I will attempt to describe it .. the ships approaching you look like they are "rolling over the edge of a circular surface" as they approach you from the top or bottom ..only about 1/8th of the top and bottom of the monitor is affected.

: Fonts are also affected the same .. eg in galaga the score font is massively squished compared to the 'game over' font .. and I think they should be the same..

: I have absolutely heaps of adjustment -outwards- .. but I am at the maximum -inwards- .. that is I cannot create black borders on the top and bottom to hopefully reduce this effect ..

: some of the lower aspect games are perfectly fine .. terra cresta for example .. and they also leave me with a fair bit of adjustment too..

: I was wondering, .. should I use a different resolution ? .. as my monitors seems to be maxed out on some games .. and I would love to have them at a point where I can have more control over them ..

: .. are the games running at the original res ? .. (I would assume so) .. if so, .. why arent my cabs able to cope with resolutions like the capcom ones, and have the monitor at max adjustment?

: If i did change the res in something like advanceMame, would that indroduce 'tearing' and shearing of the playfield / sprites ? .. as the games will not be running in their original modes ....

: *sigh*

: :)

: thanks in advance to those that reply :))

: just things on my mind .. .. ..
