Run a game and than go into the menu (tab by default) and select input general. Pick whichever event you want to reassign and to get a shift style function just press both keys (or buttons/joys) at nearly the same time. If you wait to long you will get a OR or NOT function, I don't remember exactly. If it gets all goofed up, reselect it and press UI Select (Enter by defualt) twice quickly which should set it to none and than you can redefine it again.

CAUTION: Be careful when redefining the UI select because if you mess it up and select none you won't be able to reassign the event again. How do I know this? Don't ask! ;-)

To be ultra-safe, I would backup your default.cfg file in the /cfg directory as this is the file that is modified when you change your Input (general) functions in the menu config.

BTW, all this works the same way with standard MAME.

: I just have a encoder from a keyboard that I hacked myself and mapped out the matrix. Where is it that yuou define the shift keys? I remember seeing that when I was working with ArcadeOS, but that was for AOS.

: : I don't know how to directly type in the scancodes but how about using a key shift combination to bring you to the configuration screen and than using the inputs from your sticks and buttons to setup the desired inputs. You would have to setup the shift key combo that would take you into the menu configuration with your keyboard, but once you got that setup you could do the rest with your sticks/buttons.

: : Does your encoder not have a keyboard passthrough? Mine does and I have my AdvancedMAME configured to accept either the standard keyboard inputs or my sticks/buttons. For example to get to the menu while in MAME I can either press tab on the keyboard or StartPlayer1+Player1 Button1.

: : : I have AdvanceMame setup and all is running fine with a normal keyboard. I have a hacked encoder in the cabinet attached to two sticks and 10 buttons. How can I change the MAME key config simply by typing in the scancodes? I know I could select a key to change, unplug the keyboard, plug in the other encoder select it, and then switch back to the keyboard, but there has to be another way.
