Male-female it doesn't matter. It all depends
what you've got for cables. Yes the one going to the
PC should be male, but if you have an extension cable
with two male ends you're circuit board would indeed need
three female connectors.
I think you understand what's up. Just get the pinnouts
for the standard keyboard connectors and pay attention to
them when you build the circuit.
