In Reply to: Can you turn an eight-way j-stick to a four-way using settings in MAME? posted by King Of My Castle on 1, 2001 at 4:30 AM:

I was involved in that discussion and am sad to say that the software solution didn't help much.

Sometime soon I will try a different approach whereas instead of the diagnals being ignored, have MAME treat them as either left/right or up/down. It probably won't help, but worth a go.

: Hi! I remember someone posting about this but I cant find it!! I did try :)

: Anyway, the guy was annoyed that in games like Pacman his eight-way joystick was sometimes moving him in the wrong directions. A four-way wouldn't do this.

: Someone suggested that they did a hardware modification. But then a guy said that you could change the settings in MAME to be, for example, LEFT = LEFT (NOT UP) (NOT DOWN) etc...

: Any idea if this works?

: And do you just press the UP button twice to get the NOT effect?

: Thanks for your time.
