Can you turn an eight-way j-stick to a four-way using settings in MAME?

Hi! I remember someone posting about this but I cant find it!! I did try :)

Anyway, the guy was annoyed that in games like Pacman his eight-way joystick was sometimes moving him in the wrong directions. A four-way wouldn't do this.

Someone suggested that they did a hardware modification. But then a guy said that you could change the settings in MAME to be, for example, LEFT = LEFT (NOT UP) (NOT DOWN) etc...

Any idea if this works?

And do you just press the UP button twice to get the NOT effect?
