I did the same as you. Originally I was going to use the 5V, but they weren't bright enough. 12V works and looks great.
: I use the 12 volt supply from the power supply. I had an extra power plug (for like a cd rom or other device) that I just cut the yellow and black wires and spliced quick disconnects on that are wired to the coin door. I'd check your power supply plugs with a volt meter to make sure you know which one is 12V though.
