A counterweight on the shaft will probably be difficult because of clearance, however, you could replace the knob with a solid one of perhaps stainless steel - that will give you a little more 'oomph' . Also, apply a slight coating of white lithium grease to all the gear teeth. It won't make it spin completely free, but it will help.
