You act as though it is unplayable. I must be honest, I don't remember how smooth the original scrolling was. However, having just played MP now out of curiosity, in reaction to your post, I only notice the SLIGHTEST bit of jerkiness if I am watching the background very closely in Demo/Attract mode. I don't notice AT ALL during actual gameplay...
