: I realize that I don't need VSync Mame if I'm using a scan converter. But, just like Advance Mame, doesn't it help your monitor to display games at a better resolution?

The scan converter is going to pump the same resolution to your tv no matter what the input source is. THe only thing something like vsync or arcadeos is going to help you with, is a scan converter only accepts a certain number of resolutions, scan rates, etc on the INPUT side. its possible standard mame will shoot it stuff it cant handle and you wont get any picture at all. I suppose you could use arcadeos or vsync to make sure all the signals sent to the scan converter are in a range it knows how to handle. but once it passes through , everythings going to be the same on the tv side.
