most poeple who play the more recent arcade games or those that are fans of fighters, etc. put the buttons to the right of the stick on each side to come as close to recreating the feel of the game in the arcade as possible. some people put player one buttons on the left and player 2 buttons on the right, i dont understand this config at all, i am so competitive it would be the biggest excuse going "sure, its becuase you had player X side, lets switch!"
I think the older the games go, the more % you will find that had a control panel config with buttons on the left, but as I'm not a retro game expert, I don't want to make any statements about specific %, etc.
