The default controls for the gamepad are different than the twinsticks. The gamepad has the move keys all on the thumbpad, to move in a direction with the twinsticks you have to push both sticks in that direction. The rotate controls are on the gamepads analog control if I remember right, with the twinsticks you move one stick forward and the other back to rotate.
