best way to hack a sidewinder?

i like my hotrodse a lot, but its too bulky, and it missfires in callus/neoragex... both of which i use almost daily. i'm going to make my own independant controllers similar to the ones on http://cps2shock.retrogames.com/jamma.html

im going to use sidewinders for 2 reasons: they are easy to link together, and easy to hack. i have one question regarding them though. is it best to find a common ground on the controller, or should i just hook up two leads to every button? and if i should find a common ground, does anybody have any website info so i dont have to go searching for the ground and possibly screwing something up? thanks =]
