I haven't dug into this very deep but it looks like something we all could use. At EmuAdvice they've started up a new project that should integrate into MAME where you can see how the control panel was laid out for a particular game. Should be a great help for those building controllers or just trying to figure out how to play a game. In case thie link doesnt work, it's here :
