49 way joystick in MAME?

I'm surprised nobody has written about this in here, but has anybody interfaced a 49-way joystick to a PC for MAME? I seem to remember a circuit that someone had come up with to do just do, but I cannot remember.

Or if you haven't done that, does anyone know if I could use a 49-way joystick on regular arcade PCB's? I know that many of the (newer) boards that use a 49-way stick have a dip switch to go between 8 and 49, but how about the other way around?
