I just wanted to say that I managed to build a whopping 11 button USB joystick from Japanese arcade parts. I gutted an Elecom digital/analog 12 button controller, and wired all the controls to the board in the appropriate places.

As for the joystick frame, it is a metal one purpose built for building your own parts. Some company makes them here in Japan (Joy joy fami or some company like that), and the one I got was the 11 button model. The Joystick is an 8 way typical Japanese controller (I don't like them a great deal, because the movements are too loose) but they are microswitched. The buttons are all Sanwa supply leaf-switch, and they are the standard type of button in game centres over here.

I am going to the Amusment expo in Tokyo this weekend to see if I can dig out some microswitch buttons from one of the stands and get some contacts.

I've also made Joysticks compatible with the Commodore 64, Amiga, and Atari using the same parts.
