I believe this is mentioned in the site in couple of places... But if you aren't precise in your movements, games with 4 way joysticks can act funny when they receive two inputs at once (i.e. - a diagonal direction) Your character could stop moving, or jump unexpectedly. It might not matter in some games, and if you're pretty precise in your control of the joystick, it might never bother you.
If you don't have joystick set up, try playing your favorite 4-way game with the keyboard and see what happens if you hit a diagonal - try moving from forward to up "through" diagonal, like if you rolled a joystick, and see what happens.
Of course, this is ignoring the whole concept of classic arcade feel in 4-ways that were limited by a plate or what not.
I get along fine with an 8-way, but it's a matter of taste.
