It depends on what games you want to play... If you want them for the SNK games, I would *not* go with the optical. The feel is totally wrong -- you don't get the original "click" precision of the rotary switch sticks.
Also, based on my experience setting up spinners, trackballs, and rotary switch controllers, you may have fewer headaches tweaking the settings for rotary switch sticks. See my posts on Druin's message boards for more info...
