A good way to drill smaller holes is to start with a
small bit first 1/8 inch or smaller and then step through
the bit sizes until you get to the size you need. this is a
long process but it works.

The best way is to get a UNIBIT (actual name of the bit).
This bit is a stepped so you do not have change bits as you are
drilling. This bit is expensive, but worth it.

For larger holes I use a fine toothed holesaw and predrill the pilot
hole with a 1/8 inch bit.
