You might consider doing the "standard" joystick/6buttons and then hacking some some nintendo type controllers. This way you can play X-Men and then pull out your controllers and play Nintendo (or whatever). Just have them wired up and stuck somewhere maybe with velcro or maybe in a hidden drawer.
