The smaller balls are weighted differently than the larger - they tend to spin freely for slightly longer than the 3" - small difference, but noticeable if you try the same game side by side w/ the 2 different sizes.

Both spinners and tracballs require virtually no additional space under the panel to function - I am a big fan of interchangable panels (I currently have 4 w/ 2 more in the works). If you insist on one panel, I strongly suggest that you make a dummy panel first and play w/ the layout until you are happy with the spacing and placement of all your controls
