Yes, keyboards can be had for a song...but it will take a first timer hours to sort everything out and hack the keyboard. It is very easy to trash the little pcb in the KB by soldering to it...time wasted...start over. If you get the soldering done with no mishaps you will very probably find that some inputs won't work while others are pressed....like you can't shoot while moving diagonal up and left...now you have to try to remap a key or two...time wasted. Another thing that will likely happen is when 2 players are going at it controls will ghost...you didn't hit hyperspace...but it happened...better try remapping some more keys...time wasted. Keep trying until you get everything to work...if ever.
Now, on the other hand you could spend around $47 and have confidence.
