What is the point of using true dos?

I'm curious why some of you prefer to run your arcade PCs in True Dos. With the powerful systems (that I'm assuming) we all use, it surely can't be for speed/framerate gains. It seems like a lot of trouble to go through... for what? And why use actual DOS instead of windows9x's "true Dos"?

No offense is intended here. I'm just curious.
