How do 6 button gamepads get the extra 2 buttons??

I'm totally lost as to how this is achieved, when all of the information I have sourced on wiring a controller to the joystick port state that you are limited to 4 buttons.

I have a feeling the answer will be that it is done with hardware, but HOW? If it is some kind of discreet circuit, perhaps there is someone out there with sufficient nous to work out what it does and emulate it.

Reason I am asking is that I'm about to build a number of joystick consoles for friends etc, and being in Australia it makes any simple option other that wiring direct to the joystick port VERY expensive. I don't want to go for keyboard hacking as it is just too damn fiddly, and makes maintenance a nightmare.

So I suppose the bottom line is to ask if there is a relatively easy way to get 6 buttons on a single controller using the joystick port?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback.
