In Reply to: Can an 8-way joystick be configured for 4-way in Mame? posted by ferris on 7, 2001 at 11:42 AM:

: I want to use my 8-way joystick to play 4-way games like ms. pacman without having to switch it to 4-way (Happs switchable).

I tried Triggerfin's trick to lock out the diagonals, and oh boy did it suck.

If you don't move the joystick exactly left/right/up/down, it's the same as not moving
it at all. A real 4-way joystick will have few
if any positions where no switch is pressed. Locking out the diagonals of an 8-way creates a LOT of no-switch positions.

Try it, but I doubt you'll like it.

to do it, select the input (for example, right), and move the joystick right, up, up, down, down.
This means right NOT up NOT down. And similarly for the other 4 directions.
