Can an 8-way joystick be configured for 4-way in Mame?

I want to use my 8-way joystick to play 4-way games like ms. pacman without having to switch it to 4-way (Happs switchable). I think there was some discussion on this on the board not too long ago, but I cant remember. I know you can set Mame to do "this or that" control settings, but havent figured out how to do "this but not that" settings. If I knew how, then I think I could configure the 8-way as a 4-way only by disabling the diagonals.

Has anyone done this or know how to do this ???
