PS/2 mouse X-Y splitter?

That Hagstrom device that allows sharing of a spinner and a trackball...seems a little limiting.

If I understand, you can plug in a trackball using the happs interface, and plug in a spinner via some connector I have no idea about...and then have both units with the spinner selected between X and Y axis.

But what if you want just 2 spinners and that's it on the one ps/2 port?

If someone could come up with an interface to do this, having 2 input ps/2 connectors to plug in 2 ps/2 mice/spinners/whatever and a 3rd ps/2 connector to plug into the computer, and manually select whether the 2 inputs are used on X or Y axis, or even have one input with one axis and the second input using both axes (ie trackball), would that not be a better interface, giving simultaneous use of the 2 input devices with separate axes or even dual axes fully shared?

I ask because I might be on the verge of pulling out my inventor's hat again.

The one thing I don't know is....in MAME can you assign the x and y axes of the same port, to different functions, like port 1 Xaxis for spinner 1 and port 1 Yaxis for spinner 2? Or do you NEED 2 ports for 2 axis separation...or what? Now I'm going in circles.
