My mileage varies. I've had good results. What I have found, that may be of help if you're having that problem is, if you're using "in cabinet=yes" in AOS, it doesn't work too well, AdvanceMAME doesn't work too well, and the -monitor arcade switch in regular MAME doesn't work too well. I've found that just running the official build of MAME with no special arcade monitor stuff, it works great. There's a few games that need settings changed, like APB, Super Sprint and other medium-res games, but they work fine if you set the resolution to 640x480.
