: It's not clear to me if I should be using the 3" or 2" carriage bolts.
: Can I use the 3" for both joystick and trackball or would I be better off with the 2" on the joystick?

With the joysticks, the biggest concern for length is how much panel you have to go through. I used 1.5" long 1/4" carriage bolts to hold my HAPP sticks to my 3/4" control panel and they are still plenty long. ( $.29 / pound at harware store)

You will most like need (4) 3" to hold the trackball to the mounting plate, and (4) 2" screws to hold theplate to the panel. (they are probably way to long for the panel, but at least they match in color)

: Also, and please excuse my ignorance on this, what does w/SEMS meen?

w/SEMS means there is a type of lock washer attached to the nut.

: Will I need any special tools or are these just normal hex nuts?

They are normal hex nuts.

: Can I assume that the bolts are those with a rounded top? If so would these
: also be a good choice for mouning lexan on the control pannel?

I would use a shorter bolt with a larger diameter to hold lexan down. (see above with the 1/4" screws) I could be wrong though, I do tend to use alot of over-kill in my projects. :)
