What I did was buy a vga extension cable from wal-mart. It just so happens that the brand that they carry, allows you to actaully unclip the plastic surrounding the vga connector, thus exposing the wires/colors. Then, since you don't need the other end, lop it off. Now you can trace your colors ;)
Not sure what brand(generic anyway), but take a look at the ends to see if you can unclip them. -Ace-
