The most buttons per player?...

Quick question: I want my cabinet to have compatibility with every game (button wise). I was planning on having 6 buttons for players 1 & 2 and 3 buttons for players 3 & 4, but I see 8 buttons for players 1 & 2 for most Neo Geo games. Every game I checked actually used only 4 buttons, so I was wondering why Mame reports 8 buttons? Is my button config going to be enough, or do I need more buttons?
