Thanks for the info, Mark. I hadn't considered looking at a DR-DOS model. I found it interesting that DR is a version of DOS that allows for unaware threaded multitasking. A fella might actually be able to simultaneously power 2 arcade cabs (say one with a vertical and one with a horizontal monitor) from the same CPU, assuming the controls didn't get overly stupid. Thanks for the info. Please keep me informed on your project.

: : The reason I'm interested is that I'm not being very successful at properly configuring the DOS Networking client, and I want to be able to autoupdate my MAME machine across my LAN (It's also going to be my file server and proxy box- hate to waste all those processing cycles...).

: Ah, I want to do the same... make my box a proxy/router, web server, etc. Wouldn't it be cool to telnet into your box to remotely administer it. Also, you could put live info on your web page, "Game currently being played: Gyruss".

: I looked into using XMAME on Linux. X can be configured with arcade monitor resolutions. But none of the frontends have been written with an arcade monitor/cabinet setup in mind. Brian Lewis has put considerable time and effort into ArcadeOS, and I wouldn't want to have to reinvent the wheel. Things like putting the arcade video mode in BIOS and sending a signal to turn on the arcade monitor are way cool.

: So, I decided to see how much I could get done in DOS. I checked Lineo's DR-DOS (http://www.lineo.com/products/products.html) and their TCP/IP offering. Looks pretty good, and is currently supported. In fact, they are still developing it and have added some features that are aimed at the embedded systems market, and would be great for arcade machines. Like booting from Flash ROM. How'd you like your MAME machine to start up instantly, like a real arcade machine? I plan to look into that a bit more.

: Anyway, if you manage to get it all working, let me know...

: -Mark.
