DOS Mame and Win ME - Help!!!

Just got a new system with Win ME and SB Live Value installed. To my dismay, DOS Mame is incredibly slow when sound is enabled (blindingly fast with no sound). I am a diehard DOS Mame user. Tried installing Win98, but ran into problems so I think I'm stuck with Win ME. Any solution besides switching to Mame32? Anyone else have this problem? Thanks!
