Problem: Setting pause to "Q" in mame, gets hosed when running Amame

I have a problem, and I am sure there is a simple fix. I have been trying to find an answer in the archives but there is not one. I have an I-PAC wired up to 2 joysticks, 2 player start buttons, and 7 player buttons. That's 4 player 1 buttons, 2 player 2 buttons, and the 3rd player 2 button, as wired on the I-PAC, is supposed to be my pause. "Q" is the letter that player 2's 3rd button is. When I first set it up, I just tab out of a game in mame and set the main configuration in mame to accept "Q" as the pause. This works fine until I run a game with Amame.exe. Then my "Q" setting gets set back to "P". After I fix it (back to "Q" in Amame) and I continue to run games that I use Amame on, it stays set, but as soon as I run a game with mame again it sets it back to "P". Why? It just means that if anybody runs an Amame game, then runs a Standard mame game on my setup, the pause won't work until I set it again. Is there a way to fix this?

Hope this is not too confusing...

TIA
