Control panel height?

Newbie here, so be gentle should anything exceedingly stupid escape from my lips. I've began gathering parts to build a cabinet and am wondering how high to place the control panel.

I've a Donkey Kong upright with a control panel 36" from the ground. I'm 6'1" and find this a bit low when standing, it causes my wrists to bend pretty far and becomes uncomfortable fairly quickly.

For my MAME cabinet, I was going to add about 3 or 4 inches. But I don't want it to be uncomfortable for shorter players.

While longer solo sessions can use a barstool, play will probably be stand-up when entertaining guests.
