...and after spending 30 minutes screwing around with the video setup so it would actually load the game I tried Sinistar and found that the controls DON'T work properly. Yes, it's possible to turn the ship and make it change direction ( just as it is in the official release of MAME ) but in as in all versions of MAME it's IMPOSSIBLE to make the ship come to a complete stop ( the ship is constantly moving ).

Maybe the problem is that nobody actually realizes that the ship SHOULD be able to come to a complete stop??

I'm convinced there is a problem with the controls and the problem is that there is nothing in the driver to tell the software(ROM)when the joystick is centered ( no keys pushed, no directional input ). How can I prove this? Simply fire up the game, don't touch any controls, and you will notice that the ship will be motionless and not moving in ANY direction. Once you push any directional key it is impossible to stop the ship from moving since nothing "tells" the game when the joystick is centered ( no movement ).
I heard from one source that the problem is that the driver is for a 48 position joystick...the problem being that the arcade joystick was a 49 position; the last position being "centered".
IF I had the knowledge to fix the driver myself, I would. Unfortunately I don't...all I can do is report the problem and it seems to be falling on deaf ears.

For now I just play the "Williams Arcade Classics" version. I would much rather be able to use MAME since I use it to run all other ROMS and since I can enable scan lines to simulate an arcade monitor...BUT "Williams Arcade Classics" is the only current emulator that I know of that runs Sinistar (one of my all-time favorite games and arguably one of the greatest classic arcade games) with WORKING controls.

-Maybe the MAME team will fix it on the next rev ;)

: ...if you use Advance MAME. :)

: In fact, a TON of games that had similar control probs work great in Advance MAME - this was actually at my suggestion long ago, and Andrea implemented it, he's quite cool. :)

: -P-

: : ...with Prophet's comment "I think MAMEdevs should do what they want with their spare time, just like we all do. And MAME is their spare time." while at the same time agreeing with NIVO that (in my opinion) the MAME team should take some time out to fix some of the things that have been getting neglected with many of the recent releases.

: : The key word is "I think" meaning "in my opinion". I'm certainly grateful to the MAME team for EVERY release and hope they keep up the good work...I'm not about to start telling them what to do or demanding fixes. I also have no complaints about MAME; being able to play the games even partially is better than nothing at all. If I was asked to respond honestly about what "I think" of the program though, I would have to say that in my opinion the team has somewhat lost sight of the original vision of the project.

: : Personally, I would much rather see the controls for Sinistar working than have more majhong, trivia,or Supermortalpunchergutsquasherkombatfigher-IV games emulated. It seems that many of the classic games have been put on the side-burner and remain broken while newer games are constantly added. I personally would rather see 5 existing and historically important games fixed than 30 new ones.

: : Like I said, I'm not complaining...just 'wishing' and voicing my opinion. MAME is definitely the greatest emulator available (free or otherwise) and I'm grateful for all that the MAME team has done to help keep the old games alive.

: : : We all know, love, and play MAME. We are fellow enthusiasts of MAME, it's what we do(LOL). Here's my question, feel free to respond as this has been on my mind for quite some time. Do you think the MAME team should take a FULL beta cycle, don't add anymore games, and just go through and fix, errors, sounds, colors, protection schemes? Or at least attempt to anyways. We have more than enough games to play as it is. I feel it would benefit the whole MAME project to try to fix what has been wrong for what seems ages. Let me iterate, this is not a rant but a suggestion. We all have said, "gee i wish that sound was working for........", and "I wish that was working right". Anybody agree on this or disagree, please respond, its all good. MAME on!
